Time to Catch Up

I finally have time to catch up on my blog!  Apologies for the nearly  month long break from writing!  Here are just a few of the  highlights from the past few weeks.

  • My mom came to visit!  It was so much fun to hang out with her.  We went to the beach, rode motors up into the hills, and just spent a lot of time hanging out with the kids.  Several times we took kids out to eat, played Monopoly, and even made chili for my reading group.  We had been learning about heritage, and since chili was a common meal in my home growing up, I decided to let them try it.  The kids all helped out- Angelica made the garlic bread, Argei Kem made the rice, and Jonjon grated the cheese.  Although it was very different from their normal meals, they all enjoyed it.
  •  Recently, while studying about the seasons, I had been trying to explain all of the winter clothes to my American Studies students.  It is a bit difficult for kids who wear shorts and a t-shirt everyday to understand.  So, in order to help them understand it better, my mom brought with her a set of winter clothes: a winter jacket, snow pants, boots, mittens, a scarf, and a hat.  The kids had a blast trying them on.  Most of them wanted to start with the boots or the jacket which made putting on the snow pants rather difficult.  They finally figured out the correct order in which to put them on.  The kids tromped around the classroom and laughed about how heavy they were. (Winter clothes are HARD to get on and off when you’re hot and sweaty!)

  • The 3rd quarter of our school year started this last week.  We decided James was ready to move up from the Level C1 reading class into my reading class.  He was thrilled!  On Monday, after we took a spelling test, we were writing down the definition of the words.  One definition was rather long so James asked it there was a shortcut to it.  I told him, “Just write small.”  He looked at me confused and asked, “What?”  Again I said, “Just write small.”   He started to write and then looked at me confused again and asked, “Why?”  Only then did I realize he was writing the word “small” in his notebook.  We all got a good laugh out of that as I explained that I wanted him to write the words in SMALL print.
  • During science class this week, I gave the kids a challenge.  We called it “Mission Impossible”.  They were each given one notecard (3×5) and their goal was to try and fit their whole body through it by only cutting it (no tape or glue).  It was hilarious!  We laughed so hard that kids were rolling on the floor.  Nobody figured it out during the class period, but one boy had the creative idea to cut a person (himself) out of paper to fit through the notecard.  You can see some pictures below of the kids attempts to fit through their notecards.
  • Thursday we had our annual Thanksgiving program.  Uncle Paul shared the Thanksgiving story with a live Turkey.  The kids played a blindfold turkey drawing game and shared some of the things they were thankful for. (watch the video below to hear some of them)  Then the moment the kids were all waiting for…the winners of the annual turkey coloring contest!  This year the winners were Christian (big), Maricris, Sheena, Christian (small), and Lerma.  The winners got to attend Thanksgiving dinner with the staff.  There was lots of new and interesting foods for them to try.  They all liked the turkey, but only Christian (small) liked the cranberries.  Lerma’s favorite food was the coke.  Sheena like the green beans and the gravy, and Christian (big) enjoyed the stuffing the most!
